Dianella nigra is a perennial herb native to New Zealand. The small flax-like plant grows in 1m clumps with a height of 0.5m and is found commonly growing in coastal to montane areas. Known for its bright blue berries that appear in summer from thin brown stems in the centre of the plant. The Dianella nigra thrives in part shade and it tolerant of most soils. The plant can easily be grown from the division of plants or from seed. The species look excellent mass planted and work well in dry spots under existing vegetation.
