Handsome canopy tree found coastal areas throughout Northland.
Corynocarpus laevigatus is a broadleaf native New Zealand tree also commonly referred to as Karaka. The karaka tree mainly grows in coastal conditions and occasionally is found growing in inland forests. The leafy canopy tree can be up to 15m in height and is distributed across the North Island and upper South Island. In summer the Karaka produces bright orange fleshy drupes which attracts native birds. The tree thrives most conditions and is tolerant of dry conditions as well as wind and salt spray.
Corynocarpus can be used as a specimen tree, broad street tree in wide berms, or even as a clipped hedge or shelter. Removing the lower branches and competing stems will encourage Karaka to form a dense spreading shade tree.
