A small tree found lowland forests throughout New Zealand. Slow growing but ideal for garden situations producing attractive inflorescent red berries.

Slow growing tree that grows to a height of ip to 25m. Very common throughout New Zealand.

The tree has dark green leathery leaves approximately 7.5cm long and 4cm wide. It produces masses of creamy flowers in summer which are sweet-scented. The flowers form in erect spike-like clusters and are attractive to a range of insects and birds.

Tolerant of a wide range of conditions and soil types, though it does best in high light and in free draining soils.
