A tree of coastal areas, flowers of different shades of reds smoother the tree through early summer.
Metrosideros excelsa is most commonly known as New Zealands iconic pōhutukawa tree or the New Zealand christmas tree because of the masses of red flowers it produces around mid december.
The large coastal tree has sprawling branches, leathery oval shaped leaves and crimson red bristly flowers. The tree naturally grows north of Poverty Bay and north of Taranaki but because of such early cultivation it is now as far south as Dunedin. After 15 years the tree will roughly reach a size of 4-6m in height.
The pōhutukawa is frost tender when young and prefers free draining soils and full sun. Its upright growth habitat as a juvenile tree makes it a great city or street tree or great for screening.
