Coastal tree found North Cape to Nelson. Kohekohe flowers are an important and favoured source of floral nectar for Tui and Bellbird.

Dysoxylum spectabile, also commonly known as Kohekohe is a medium sized native New Zealand tree. Distributed across New Zealand the tree is found growing as a dominant or co-dominant species in warmer coastal to lowland forests.

Kohekohe produces panicles of scented white flowers directly from the trunk or branches. Kohekohe is notable for having characteristics normally associated with trees growing in the tropics. This strange habit is called cauliflory. The stout and erect branches give the tree a dense and attractive canopy.

The Kohekohe has broad glossy green leaves that make it fit in with any tropical themed garden as well as cauliflorous green and white flowers appearing in March every alternate year.

The quick growing tree can each a height of 15m and thrives in deep moist soils.

Kohekohe flowers are an important and favoured source of floral nectar for Tui and Bellbird.

Maori boiled the bark in water and drank it as a tonic. The wood was used for building canoes but the wood is soft and not as durable as hardwoods and tends to rot quickly.
