Pohutukawa Coast Programme

After a report released in 1989 which showed only ten percent of the original coastal pohutukawa forest remained, and its survival was seriously threatened by pests and disease, the Whangarei District Council with help from the NZ Refinery launched the Pohutukawa Coast Programme. The initial focus was to plant 9000 pohutukawa trees over five years along the districts coastline.

2014 is the 24th year of the programme and will bring the total number of trees distributed since it's beginning to 53,960.
