It's rewarding to now drive south and see plants we have grown here at Tawapou thriving on the State Highway. The Poa cita (tussock grass) performs so well on such a windy site. Unfortunately, in the past poor maintenance has let these areas down. Let’s hope this time they are looked after more.
Some years ago we supplied the plants for the Kamo By-Pass (State Highway One) which received one of the highest awards for the use of local threatened species which is a recognised way to ensure the survival of some of these plants. Unfortunately, because of the poor preparation and no aftercare the whole concept has been somewhat lost. We hope that when it re-planted in the future the main rare trees planted will remain.
