This hook sedge is variable in colour ranging from dark green when grown in shade to reddish brown.

This native hooked sedge is naturally found from the coast to up to 1000m in native bush as well as shrubland.

Uncinia uncinate forms dense mounds of orange-red, or green, arching leaves which are 20-40 cm long and 4-7 mm wide. The grass can reach up to 50cm in height with a flower stem up to 60cm tall. The flower is a simple spike with male flowers on the top and female flowers below.

Long hooks are formed to attach its fruit to passing animals.
