A common tree of lowland forests throughout New Zealand. Purple berries attractive to birds.

This small bushy tree has glossy green fleshy soothes leaves which are arranged in fans of five leaflets. It is endemic to both the North and the South Island and inhabits moist broadleaf forests, stream sides and forest margins.

During winter (June to August) this tree produces red' pink flowers which are followed by fleshy purple fruits between August and February.

It grows up to 8m tall and in most soils and situations.
