Found throughout New Zealand, very similar to P.crassifolius although a lot slower growing. Juvenile stage has strongly toothed leaf margins.

Beautiful coastal tree growing 10-15 m tall, with one or more trunks. Branches spreading to upright with moderate to dense and overlapping leaflets. Primarily a species of coastal forest, often on cliff faces or banks overlooking estuarine rivers or inlets. Occasionally found in swamp forest. Distinguished from all other Kowhai species by the absence of a divaricating/filiramulate juvenile stage.

Found from Mangonui to Marlborough. Attractive coastal tree growing up to 12m high with light green oval leaves.

One of our large forest trees found from Mahia Peninsula and Taranaki northwards. Clusters of red fruit appealing to wood pigeon follow pinkish red flowers.
