Excellent tree for coastal situations with attractive small white flowers. Ngaio are poisonous to stock.

Myoporum laetum or more commonly known as ngaio is a tree that is endemic to New Zealand and distributed across both islands including Three Kings. The trees habitat is coastal and lowland forests. The ngaio tree can grow up to 20m tall and it has fleshy, yellow to green, conspicuously white to yellow gland-spotted leaves. Between October and January the tree produced small white flowers with purple spots.

Myoporum laetum is an excellent dense fast-growing tree great for shelter or as a revegetation tree. Suitable for a wide variety of positions, including exposed coastal sites. This plant is poisonous as its leaves contains ngaione which has anti-bacterial properties and can cause liver damage to live stock.
