Attractive large sub-tropical like foliage, found only on the Three Kings Islands.
Elingamita johnsonii is a small tree endemic to the Three Kings Islands approximately 55 km north of the North Island of New Zealand. Naturally it grows the west of the islands as an understory plant within the coastal forest. The slowing growing plant can reach a height of 3m and a spread of 2m. The tree has dark green glossy foliage and very distinctive bunches of red fleshy fruit that may be seen on the tree at any time of the year. The fruits are edible, the white flesh tasting like a salty apple.
Elingamita johnsonii does best in fertile, free draining soil and full sun once its established. However the species is highly sensitive to cold and frost.
