Elatostema rugosum also commonly known by its Maori name parataniwha which derives from the maori word taniwha meaning shark. The common name was given due to the comparison between the rough skin of a shark and rough texture of the prominently veined foliage of the Elatostema rugosum.

This native herbaceous ground cover is native to New Zealand and is most commonly found in wet and shaded such as stream sides and gullies in the North Island. Growing up to 1m high the parataniwha has attractive bronze green leaves sometimes with purple tones depending on the soil.

When placed in the right shaded and moist soils the parataniwha can make an excellent ground cover or edging plant in gardens and can look tidy with little to no maintenance.
