Found throughout NZ in moist soils. Distinguishes itself from other tree fern species because of its 'skirt' of dead fronds that hang from the top of the plant.

Cyathea smithii also referred to by its Maori name Katote is a small understory native tree fern. The Katote grows in lowland to montane areas throughout New Zealand, most commonly found in montane areas of the North Island. The tree fern grows to a height of 5m and has soft green fronds (2.5 metres) that diverge out from the top of the trunk. The stems of the fronds are covered in small red and white hairs and pointed scales. Cyathea smithii distinguishes itself from other species because of its 'skirt' of dead fronds that hang from the top of the plant. Not only does this give the plant and interesting aesthetic but it also protects the trunk from vines, epiphutes, pests and also helps to maintain humidity levels.

The Cyathea smithii is easy to grown but prefers shelter from wind and needs a consistent amount of moisture in order to survive so water the plant in dryer months.
