Tallest of the tree ferns

Mamaku is the tallest of our tree ferns and can reach a height of 20 metres with a crown of 20 to 30 curving fronds, spreading up to 14 metres across. Found growing from sea level to 600 metres on the Three Kings Islands, throughout the North and South Islands, Stewart and the Chatham Islands. Mamaku also occurs in Tasmania, Victoria and some Pacific Islands.

This species is what I would describe as a high light fern growing in open situations (feet in the shade, head in the sun). Young plants should be planted in a fairly sheltered position and watered in dry weather. A reasonably rich soil with plenty of hummus is best. It is reasonably quick growing adding distinct NZ and subtropical flavour to gardens.
