Sophora tetraptera Kowhai Found naturally in the North island along riverbanks and forest margins from East Cape to Ruahine Range. Slightly larger leaf than S.chathamica and dosn't have a divaricting juvenile stage. Streblus banksii Coastal milk tree Found from Mangonui to Marlborough. Attractive coastal tree growing 3-4m high with light green oval leaves. Streblus smithii Three Kings milk tree A very rare tree found only on the Three Kings Islands. Tecomanthe speciosa Three Kings Island climber Only one plant of this species is known in the wild. A vigorous twining woody climber with large tropical-like leaves. Todea barbara Found on off-shore islands and north of Bay of Islands. Attractive fern unfortunately becoming very rare due to forestry and development. Tolerates quite dry conditions. Uncinia uncinata Hook sedge This hook sedge is variable in colour ranging from dark green when grown in shade to reddish brown. Vitex lucens Puriri One of our large forest trees found from Mahia Peninsula and Taranaki northwards. Clusters of red fruit appealing to wood pigeon follow pinkish red flowers. Weinmannia racemosa Kamahi A small tree found lowland forests throughout New Zealand. Slow growing but ideal for garden situations producing attractive inflorescent red berries. Weinmannia silvicola Towai Distribution is from Mangonui to the Bay of Plenty. Towai is not as tall growing as kamahi, it has different foliage but flowers are similar. Xeronema callistemon Poor Knights lily Confined to Poor Knights and Hen and Chicken island. Flax-like leaves and stunning red bottlebrush-like flowers through spring.
