Attractive coastal tree, much larger leaf than our mainland titoki, produces masses of red berries.
The Alectryon grandis also known as Three Kings titoki is a small tree with spreading branches belonging to the Sapindaceae family. This species differs from the other Titoki tree with its smaller height of 4 metres and larger tropical looking leaves that grow in 2-4 offset pairs. Flowers red, in small, clustered, sprays appearing October through to December. From December to April fleshy red fruit appears partly surrounding a black seed which attracts native birds such as the kereru.
Alectryon grandis is naturally found in coastal forest often growing along exposed margins and therefore can act as a successful wind buffer in coastal gardens. A layer of mulch is recommended to help the tree stay cool and retain moisture during the summer.
